Roger Williams University

Roger Williams University (commonly abbreviated as RWU) is a private, coeducational American liberal arts university located on 140 acres in Bristol, Rhode Island, above Mt. Hope Bay. It was founded fairly recently (in 1956) and it was named for theologian and Rhode Island cofounder Roger Williams.

The university has no religious affiliation. It is a leading independent university with programs in the liberal arts and the professions, where students become globally-minded citizens throughout experiential learning.

The university is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Offering 43 majors and a plethora of co-curricular activities as well as study abroad options, this university enrolls approximately 3,800 under-graduate and 850 graduate students in five professional schools.

It is one of the few colleges in the United States to offer an undergraduate degree directly in Marine Biology, and it is also the home to Rhode Island's only law school. It is one of the few institutions offering online study in Digital Forensics and also has a program in Computer Networking and Security.

RMU is a mission-based organization where a community of citizen scholars who are committed to collaboration, diverse perspectives, community service, respect for sustainability and promotion of civil discourse.

The students may live in a variety of housing options from singles and doubles to suites and apartments in six on-campus residence halls and two off-campus halls.

Roger Williams University teams participate as a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division III. The Hawks are a member of the Commonwealth Coast Conference. Men's sports include: cross country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, baseball, track and field and wrestling, while women's sports include lacrosse, cross country, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, track and field, and swimming and diving. The other sports include indoor track and sailing and there is an equestrian team.

There is a weekly campus newspaper at Roger Williams University, "The Hawks' Herald". The newspaper publishes approximately 20 issues per academic year. The campus also has an FM radio station, WQRI 88.3, which plays everything from college alternative to hip hop.

RWU offers a wide range of financial aid options including institutional grants and scholarships that are based on both merit and need. It boasts students from 55 countries around the globe in both their undergraduate and graduate programs, bringing unique languages, cultures and perspectives to campus. The transfer students are an integral part of the community at Roger Williams University. With a variety of grant and loan options available, university education is affordable for pretty much all the students.

RMU has nearly a dozen graduate programs, ranging from Architecture and Historic Preservation to Criminal Justice and Leadership. The university provides students with the limitless options of a liberal arts education as well as market-driven, relevant professional programs, 43 undergraduate majors and 13 graduate degrees, along with numerous minors and certificate programs.

The General Education Program at the university develops the capabilities and habits of mind in students, required for a life of intellectual curiosity, localized and global civic engagement, personal growth and professional developments. The core curriculum offers a wide variety of course topics from Meteorology and Climatology to Oil Painting and Dance History. Students can complete skills in interdisciplinary courses in the sciences, western civilization, social sciences, literature, philosophy and fine arts.

Roger Williams University offers a number of services to help the students through their academic career, such as studying abroad, which gives them an opportunity to continue their education at the university while living in another country. The Honors Program offers opportunities to enroll in unique and challenging classes with faculty members who care about interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative undergraduate research.
